SLAYER Drummer Interviewed At Montreal’s HEAVY MTL Festival
MusikUniverse.net conducted an interview with SLAYER drummer Dave Lombardo when the band played at this year’s edition of the Heavy MTLfestival, which was held July 24-25, 2010 at Parc Jean-Drapeau in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. You can now watch the chat below.
On August 17, 2010, SLAYER‘s DVDs — 2003′s “War at the Warfield”and 2004′s “Still Reigning” — will be reissued, and, for the first time ever, 1995′s “Live Intrusion”, having been digitally remastered, will also be available on DVD. All three will be sold separately at retail and online ($13.98 each), and the limited-edition “Slayer Live DVD 3-Pak”($29.98), will be available exclusively on SLAYER‘s web site,www.slayer.net.
“I remember around ‘God Hates Us All’,” [2001], said SLAYER‘s Kerry King, “asking when we were going to make a DVD of ‘Live Intrusion’. So, here we are, ten years later, and it’s about time.”
Every one of the SLAYER live-in-concert DVDs represents a different era of the band: “Live Intrusion” was recorded on March 12, 1995 at the Mesa Amphitheatre in Mesa, Arizona and features guitarists Kerry Kingand Jeff Hanneman, bassist/vocalist Tom Araya, and drummer Paul Bostaph. The disc, which is certified gold, includes some of the most classic SLAYER songs such as “Raining Blood” and “War Ensemble”, but also some early special tracks like “At Dawn They Sleep” and“Captor of Sin”. As a bonus, MACHINE HEAD‘s Robb Flynn and Chris Kontos join the band onstage for a cover of VENOM‘s “Witching Hour”. The opening of “Live Intrusion” features a look at some of the band’s very unique fans, in particular, with special emphasis placed upon the fan from the mid-’90s who had “Slayer” carved onto his forearm. In addition, the quality of “Live Intrusion” is high-end, as the original VHS master was located and used to create the DVD.
“War at the Warfield” was filmed at the Warfield Theatre in San Francisco, California on December 7, 2001, and like “Live Intrusion”, features drummer Paul Bostaph, marking his last release with SLAYERbefore original drummer, Dave Lombardo, rejoined the band. “Seasons in the Abyss”, “Mandatory Suicide” and “Disciple” are some of the jewels on this live collection that debuted at #3 on Billboard‘s DVD chart, and has since been certified gold.
Filmed at the Civic Center in Augusta, Maine on July 11, 2004, “Still Reigning” — also gold-certified and voted Best Live DVD by the readers of Revolver magazine — was directed by Dean Karr and recreatesSLAYER‘s thrash/punk, 28-minute classic 1986 album “Reign In Blood”performed in its entirety. The end of the video features the “Wall of Blood,” with the band, their instruments, and the stage completely drenched by a downpour of 150 liters of “blood.”
“There was no dress rehearsal for the blood trick,” explained King. “It was either going to work or it wasn’t going to work, and we know it did work. It was so hard to play, I thought I was going to have to go back and overdub all of ‘Reigning Blood’, but I listened to it and it was all there, it was just a lot more slippery with all the blood goo.”
The “Still Reigning” DVD offers bonus material including live performances of SLAYER staples such as “Hell Awaits”, “Hallowed Point”, “Necrophiliac”, “Spill the Blood” and “South of Heaven”. The DVD also marked the return of drummer Dave Lombardo. “Even before the idea of ‘Still Reigning’ became a reality, I really wanted to do a video with Dave in it,” said King, “and I knew the fans wanted that as well.”

SLAYER‘s latest album, “World Painted Blood”, was recorded in Los Angeles over two time periods, during October 2008 and then between late January and March 2009. The CD was produced by Greg Fidelman, who’s spent time in the studio with METALLICA, THE GOSSIP, THE (INTERNATIONAL) NOISE CONSPIRACY, SLIPKNOT and others, and executive-produced by longtime SLAYER colleague Rick Rubin, who suggested Fidelman for the project.
The CD initially shipped with four special collector’s edition covers. Each of the four covers displayed one-fourth of a provocative continental map illustrated with human skulls and bones; when placed together, the four images form a complete and grisly map of the world. All four of the initial album packages included a special blood-red, see-through top panel with the map displayed beneath it.
SLAYER‘s track “Hate Worldwide” was nominated for a Grammy Award in the “Best Metal Performance” category. The award eventually went to British heavy metal legends JUDAS PRIEST, who were honored for the track “Dissident Aggressor”, from the band’s 2009 live album“A Touch of Evil: Live”.

SLAYER and MEGADETH have announced the new, confirmed routing for the “American Carnage” North American Tour, which will commence with the rescheduled “Canadian Carnage East” dates in Quebec City on Friday, July 23. SLAYER will then head to Europe for a run of festival dates, returning to kick off the “American Carnage” leg in Albany, NY on August 11.
“American Carnage” will play 26 dates across the United States and Eastern Canada up to the Labor Day weekend, ending in Portland, Oregon on September 4. TESTAMENT will be special guest on all shows. Tickets purchased for the “American Carnage” shows when they first went on sale late last year will be honored for these rescheduled dates.
The “American Carnage” tour, originally scheduled to take place in January and February, had to be put on hold due to SLAYER‘s vocalist/bassist Tom Araya‘s ongoing, minimally-invasive treatments for what was diagnosed as a cervical radiculopathy, an occupational hazard for the rocker who is known for aggressively swinging his long mane of hair while performing. Right after the first of the year, Araya made the difficult decision to undergo a surgical procedure, called an anterior cervical discectomy with fusion, a relatively routine practice with an excellent recovery rate. That surgery took place in January.

SLAYER, MEGADETH, TESTAMENT Announce New Dates For ‘American Carnage’ Tour
SLAYER and MEGADETH are thrilled to announce the new, confirmed routing for the “American Carnage” North American Tour, which will commence with the rescheduled “Canadian Carnage East” dates in Quebec City on Friday, July 23. Tickets purchased for the “American Carnage” shows when they first went on sale late last year will be honored for these rescheduled dates.
Due to venue availability and other conflicts, the shows originally scheduled in El Paso, Houston, Nashville, Duluth, and Louisville cannot be rescheduled at this time, and ticket holders may obtain refunds at point of purchase. However, new cities have been added to the “American Carnage” itinerary, with dates now scheduled in Cleveland, Kansas City, San Diego, and Sacramento. The confirmed, complete itinerary is below.
That surgery took place early last week.
“The doctors said that Tom‘s surgery went very smoothly and was a resounding success,” said Rick Sales, longtime SLAYER manager. “He’s home now, doing really well, and he said the numbness in his fingers had already diminished considerably.”
Shortly after the surgery, SLAYER‘s Kerry King received a text fromTom: “Awake and feeling good, actually whatever he did, it feels better.”
The “American Carnage” tour will mark the first time that SLAYER,MEGADETH and TESTAMENT will have toured the U.S. together since 1991′s epic “Clash of the Titans” tour, making this truly a “must-see” event.
SLAYER recently announced the rescheduling of its headline tour in Europe, and MEGADETH and TESTAMENT are currently on tour together playing U.S. cities that will not be on the “American Carnage” itinerary.
